At the Georgian National Academy of Sciences the General Meeting of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences, which met in session on 11 December 2009, discussed the questions of presenting eminent scientists/scholars with prizes, diplomas and awards, the election of Foreign Members of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences and of the Poet-Academician of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences.

Before the General Meeting started, Mr. Gabor Shagy, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Hungarian Republic to Georgia, handed to Academician Thomas Gamkrelidze, President of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences, the Diploma of Honorary Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and he read the letter sent to Acad. Thomas Gamkrelidze by the President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He congratulated the outstanding Georgian scholar with another great recognition, wishing him further successes in his creative work. In his speech in response, Academician Th. Gamkrelidze asked the Ambassador to convey his thanks to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences for such high appreciation of his scholarly activity:


 

The General Meeting considered the question on the agenda of electing the Foreign Members of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences. Academician Thomas Gamkrelidze described the scientific and organizational activity of Professor Felix Unger (Austria), noting the contribution made by him to the development of cardiac surgery. He called on the Meeting to elect Professor Felix Unger a Foreign Member of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences.

Academician Thomas Gamkrelidze described the second candidate for Foreign Membership of the Academy – Professor Winfried Blum (Austria). He noted that Professor Blum’s sphere of scientific interests involved the chemistry of soils and that part of mineralogy which dealt with questions of the geography, genesis and classification of soils. Professor Winfried Blum is a Member of soil science societies of many advanced countries. Academician Thomas Gamkrelidze called on the Meeting to support the election of Winfried Blum a Foreign Member of the Academy.

Taking into account the application of the Academic council of the Academy, the General Meeting of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences unanimously elected, by open ballot, Professor Felix Unger and Professor Winfried Blum Foreign Members of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences (s. the Diplomas)

The general Meeting of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences decides:

The following persons, elected by open ballot, be considered as Foreign Members of the Academy:

1. Isaac Elishakoff – Professor of Atlanta University, USA (Applied Mechanics) (Department of Mechanics, Machine-Building and Control Processes);

2. Khoshbakht Bagi Oghli Yusifzade Academician of the Azerbaijan National Academy, who discovered and studied new deposits of oil and gas in the Republic of Azerbaijan, namely on the Caspian Sea shelf (Department of Earth Sciences);

3. Andrew Kropinski – Professor of Microbiology and Immunology of Ontario University, Canada, and Molecular and Cell Biology of the University of Guelph, Director of the Canadian Public Agency Programme of Health (Department of Biological Sciences);

4. Janail Aliev – Academician of the Azerbaijan National and Russian Federation Academies of Medical Sciences, who founded and at present directs the scientific school of Oncology (Department of Medicine);

5. Stephen Jones – Professor of Mount Holyoke Colledge, USA, an eminent US political scientist and sociologist, with knowledge of the Georgian language, and researcher into Georgian history (Department of Social Sciences);

6. Gadji Gamzatov – Daghestanian literary critic, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor, Full Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Chairman of the Presidium of the Scientific Centre of Daghestan. The main line of his scholarly activity: Study of the varied literature of Daghestan and the North Caucasus, research into the national-cultural and folkloristic heritage (Department of Language, Literature and Art).
