Professor Davit Gurgenidze’s report at the meeting of the Presidium

On July 22, 2022, a meeting of the Presidium was held at the National Academy of Sciences of Georgia, at which the rector of the Technical University of Georgia, Professor David Gurgenidze presented a report – “Hydraulic structures in Georgia (structure, problems and prospects)”. The report discussed the structure, current functions and problems of existing hydraulic structures in the field of hydraulic engineering in Georgia from the viewpoint of sustainable and efficient development. For Georgia, as a country with a mountainous terrain, numerous rivers, sea coasts and lakes in mountainous areas, hydropower facilities are of paramount importance. In his report, Professor David Gurgenidze also touched upon the following topical issues: existing and prospective large hydroelectric power plants; small, micro- and mini-power plants, storage power plants and prospects for their development; using the energy of sea waves in hydropower facilities and modern and promising approaches to the protection of rivers and sea coasts; safety of hydropower facilities; necessary measures against flooding of territories; water treatment facilities and the need for their development; creation of full-fledged drinking water protection systems in Georgia; protection of sea areas and coastline from oil spills.
