Meeting of the Commission for the Study of National Issues

On 16 November, 2021, a meeting of the Commission for the Study of National Issues was held at the National Academy of Sciences of Georgia. Academician Avtandil Arabuli delivered a report “Problems of the Georgian State Language”;. The speaker touched upon the issues of the historical formation of the state language, its relationship to the national language. The report presented the legislative and institutional mechanisms that the state must address to manage modern language processes. The nature of these processes in the current context of the formation
of neoliberal ideology was outlined. Avtandil Arabuli dwelled on the multifaceted difficulties that pose a serious threat to the modern viability of the Georgian language as a polyvalent state language. The Commission believes that the state should urgently take effective measures to implement the basic law on the state language, other related laws and regulations in order to overcome the systemic crisis that has led to extremely alarming consequences for the functioning of the state language in recent decades.
