Meeting of the Coordination and Methodological Council of Medical and Biological Sciences

On July 4, 2022, a meeting of the Coordination and Methodological Council of Medical and Biological Sciences was held at the Academy of Sciences, which was opened by Academician Ramaz Khetsuriani. The topic of discussion was: “Current translational research in the field of tuberculosis and its significance in the world and in Georgia.” Speakers: Zaza Avaliani, MD, Professor, Director of the National Center for Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases, Coordinator of the National TB Program in Georgia and Nestan Tukvadze, Head of Scientific Research at the National Center for Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases, World Health Organization, European Region for Research in the field of Tuberculosis Co-Chairman of the Board, Head of the Tuberculosis Research Curriculum, US National Institutes of Health. The above biomedical studies are translational, with the ultimate goal of practical application and implementation of the results to improve the treatment of tuberculosis. In recent years, a number of international publications resulting from ongoing translational studies based on TFDEC have become the basis for the World Health Organization’s process of updating international guidelines. The Department of Physiology and Medicine was given the task to develop a number of measures: the issue of retraining TB doctors in doctoral studies and residency; research funding; concern for the normal remuneration of doctors, etc. All these recommendations will be presented to the Presidium of the Academy, and then transferred to the government of Georgia.
