Academician Vladimir Papava’s Report
- December 23, 2023
A regular meeting organized by the National Committee of Historians of Georgia and the Ekvtime Takaishvili Historical Society was held at the Academy, at which Academician-Secretary, Academician Vladimir Papava presented a report – “Russia’s War in Ukraine and the Challenges of the World Economy.” Papava claims that at the end of 2019, the “Covid pandemic” caused a huge economic disaster as a result of which numerous economic sectors were forced to cease. A year later, Russia launched a war against Ukraine. How should the West response under these circumstances? Should they attack Russia militarily or provide material and military support for Ukraine while simultaneously putting pressure on the Russian government economically? The importance of ensuring economic security, particularly food and energy security, was underlined as the main task of the global economy. As for Georgia’s economy it is necessary to solve short-, medium- and long-term development issues. In this context, the priority sectors of the economy should be: agriculture, processing industry (which will use predominantly local raw materials) and the transition to a knowledge-based economy model.
