- December 25, 2023
The meeting of the Commission for a complex study of the highland issues was held in the National Academy of Sciences of Georgia, where the main topic of discussion was the development of road infrastructure in Tusheti and Svaneti, two highland regions in eastern and western Georgia. The reporter, the scientific secretary of the Commission, Dr. Miron Pirtskhelani, noted that the mountainous regions of Georgia have been providing food and security for the country since time immemorial. However, they are now facing the risk of isolation and depopulation due to the lack of proper roads. The strategic importance of Tusheti and Svaneti, which border Russia and historically defended the Georgian territory from invasions, was emphasized. Pirtskhelani also pointed out the potential of these regions for tourism, as they attract visitors with their unique natural and cultural heritage. He said that the National Academy of Sciences of Georgia and the Commission have been working on this problem for a year and have prepared a detailed report with recommendations and proposals.
