Problems of Arterial Hypertension Discussed at the Georgian Academy of Sciences

On October 24, 2025, a regular meeting of the Coordinating and Methodological Council for Medical and Biological Sciences was held at the National Academy of Sciences of Georgia. During this session, a report titled *“The Problem of Essential Hypertension in Georgia (80 Years of Research Dynamics)”* was presented by the President of the Georgian Hypertension Study Society, Professor Bejan Tsinamdzgvrishvili.

The prevalence of hypertension in Georgia has shown an increasing trend based on the data from 80 years of research. Hypertensive diseases account for up to 60% of the total structure of cardiovascular diseases. According to the results of the non-communicable diseases risk factors study (STEPS), the prevalence of hypertension in adults in Georgia is 37.7%, while according to hypertension screening data, it reaches 60.9% in the adult population.

The control rate of hypertension in the adult population of the country is 16%. The presentation also addressed shortcomings in the management of hypertension identified in both the primary healthcare system and the hospital sector, as well as the strategies to overcome these issues.
