Commission for Study of Topical Issues of Medicine in Georgia

On 16 December 2019, the fourth meeting of the Commission on the study of topical issues of medicine in Georgia dedicated to the problematic issues of transplantology in the country was held at the National Academy of Sciences of Georgia. The invited experts discussed such important issues as: financial analysis of various forms of renal replacement therapy; key challenges we face in kidney transplantation; stages and prospects of liver transplant surgery. It was noted that kidney transplantation is the cheapest method of renal replacement therapy and an increase in the number of these operations will bring significant financial savings to the state budget. Some of the most important issues of the development of transplantology in Georgia were discussed: the lack of uniform state guidelines and protocols of recipient donors before their operation, and the need to create a multidisciplinary team of specialists necessary for adequate postoperative treatment; lack of funds necessary for preoperative investigations and training of the recipient donor; the need for the introduction of modern immunosuppressive regimens, etc. The meeting was attended by members of the commission, academicians and experts of Georgian medicine.
