On 3 June 2020, meeting of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences was held. The president of the Academy, Academician Giorgi Kvesitadze stated that due to the coronavirus pandemic, a state of emergency and quarantine declared in the country, the election process for new academicians became impossible.

On 13 March 2020, by a decision of the Presidium of the Academy, the election process for new academicians was temporarily suspended for several months. Currently, the state of emergency and quarantine have been lifted and the regulations imposed by the government allow the resumption of the election campaign from June 5 to July 15 of this year, in accordance with the three-month period established by the charter of the election campaign.

The scientific departments of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences, where the selection of candidates for academicians is held, must strictly follow the regulations established by the Coordinating Council of the Government of Georgia at all stages of the election process.
