Joint Meeting of the Commission for the Study of Civilizations of the Black and Mediterranean Seas and the International Association of Kartvelologists

On May 5, 2022, a joint meeting of the Commission for the Study of Civilizations of the Black and Mediterranean Seas and the International Association of Kartvelologists was held via the Zoom platform at the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Georgia. Gaga Shurgaia, professor at the University of Oriental Studies in Naples, delivered a report entitled: “New Interpretation of Vakhtang Gorgasali’s Church Reform”. Information presented concerned Vakhtang Gorgasali’s personality preserved both in Georgian and foreign historical sources and documents. The church reform conducted by Vakhtang Gorgasali, its  political and historical significance for the Georgian Church was discussed. More details are given in the monograph – “King of Kartli Vakhtang I Gorgasali. At the origins of the autocephaly of the Georgian Orthodox Church”, Rome, 2018 (in Italian, 706 pages). The high academic level of the report presented by Professor Shurgaia, the interdisciplinary nature of his monograph and its scientific as well as educational significance were emphasized. The speakers expressed their desire to translate and publish the monograph in Georgian.
