Academician Elizbar Javelidze Turns 85

The 85th anniversary of the birth of academician Elizbar Javelidze was solemnly celebrated at the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Georgia. The event was opened by the president of the Academy, Academician Giorgi Kvesitadze. The solemn meeting was attended by Academy members, representatives of the legislative bodies and institutions of higher education. Academician Roin Metreveli delivered a report on the most important stages of Elizbar Javelidze’s life and activity. He is a prominent representative of the Georgian Orientalist school, namely Georgian Turkology. His works on the relationship between Eastern and Georgian cultures deserve special attention. Academician Elizbar Javelidze is the author of over 300 research papers and publicistic letters. Currently, Elizbar Javelidze is the academician-secretary of the Department of Language, Literature and Art of the National Academy of Sciences of Georgia, and at the same time, the chairman of the Commission for Studying National Issues. Academician Elizbar Javelidze is a scholar and citizen committed to the dialogue of civilizations, cultures and humanistic ideals. His scholarly activity is closely connected with Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. He made a great contribution to the education of qualified personnel. Elizbar Javelidze continues to work in the scientific and public spheres with the same energy and enthusiasm.
