  • December 5, 2022

The National Academy of Sciences of Georgia hosted the conference of the Coordination and Methodological Council of Medical and Biological Sciences on the topic: “Scientific research in medicine: achievements, issues and prospects.” In the reports presented at the conference, it was emphasised that the promotion of science in Georgia is a complex process that involves many different components, in particular, the determination of biomedical research priorities and the importance of scientific analysis of problems in various fields of medicine, as well as the organization of conferences, workshops, seminars, etc., internship of young specialists abroad; short-term targeted visits; invitation of foreign professors and specialists, lectures, seminars, membership in electronic libraries, membership of international, professional associations, support for publication of national or international scientific journals. Special emphasis was done on doctoral studies in Georgia. Statistical rates of admission and completion of doctoral studies are declining. One of the reasons for this is the leveling of the importance of the doctoral degree in the country, which reduces the interest of potential applicants in entering doctoral studies and scientific activities. The National Academy of Sciences of Georgia should play an important role in the development and progress of science in the country. In particular, one of the priorities of the Academy, based on the forecasts for the development of the country, should be to determine the priorities of individual branches of science and promote their development. In cooperation with higher education and research institutions, the implementation of joint higher education programs, etc.

The reports presented specific recommendations, both on enhancing the role of the Academy of Sciences, and on further stimulating science, on educational and scientific reform.
