On 5 November, 2001, a scientific conference dedicated to the life and activity of the great Georgian political figure, King Erekle II of Kartli-Kakheti was held at the Georgian National Academy of Sciences. The event was organized by the Academy, National Committee of Georgian Historians and Ekvtime Takaishvili Society for Georgian History and Ethnography. King Erekle II was a brilliant military strategist and tireless fighter, a famous politician and reformer. His reign (from 1762 to 1798 )is associated with the reforms aimed at the unification and modernization of Georgia, based on knowledge and education, the development of industry and culture – the emergence of the first factories and the launch of mining, the establishment of theological seminaries and schools, secular theater.
