Meeting of the Commission on Environmental Safety
- November 3, 2023
The presentation of the book of Doctor of Biological Sciences Gia Kajaia – “Ecology: Problems of Our Time” and the report of PhD in Physics and Mathematics Kakha Gorgadze “Radon irradiation and lung cancer” was held at a meeting of the Commission on Environmental Safety. The book describes the negative changes in the biosphere over the last century, highlights the conditions for the emergence and development of the anthropogenic environmental factor, the current state of the atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere. Regarding the report, the speaker noted that radon causes lung cancer and the mortality rate reaches high numbers every year, making it the second leading cause of lung cancer after tobacco use. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified radon as a carcinogen that causes lung cancer. Byproducts of the radioactive decay of radon enter the body through the respiratory tract. When these radioactive elements enter the body, they emit alpha particles that damage lung tissue, leading to lung cancer after long-term exposure.
